The 2000s On High Desert: Highs, Lows, Drama, Tragedy

KTVZ

A lot can – and did – happen in a decade on the High Desert as the new millennium began, from the fastest growth rate in the state (and among the nation’s fastest) to the region’s worrisome – and to some, surprising — inclusion in one of the swiftest, steepest economic declines in U.S. history.

But of course, the biggest news that shocked the nation and the world – the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that followed – reverberated throughout the rest of the 2000s, bringing shock waves to Central Oregon as casualties of friends, family and loved ones hit hardback home.

On the air last week, NewsChannel 21 provided a collage of sorts of some of the biggest or most memorable stories of the past 10 years.

Here, thanks to online archives and stacks of newspapers, is more of an almanac-style list- year by year, and for 2009, month by month – of 10 years worth of news headlines.

It’s not all-inclusive, by any means, but should jog many memories of the newsmakers, debates, controversies and surprises that have arisen in the decade past – including issues that will linger well into the coming weeks, months and years.
