Compost Given to Newport Market Customers

A new Central Oregon product for your lawn and garden was given away at Newport Avenue Market Saturday. It’s called ReGrow.

ReGrow is a nutrient rich compost from Deschutes Recycling that is a result of compostable food material received from local places like Newport Avenue Market.

The market began its composting program over a year ago and says it saw the affects immediately.

The market has reduced it’s trash by over 60 percent and it averages about 8,000 pounds of compost a month.

Saturday, customers were treated to a free five-gallon bucket of the compost.

“It’s full circle — they get to see what the final product is, they get to use this nutrient rich soil for their own gardening, get to play in the dirt,” said Allyn Jean, marketing director for Newport Avenue Market. “Kids have been out here shoveling it, they have been having fun fighting over it, so it’s really fun to see and give back to the community.”

Deschutes Recycling says the compost provides the benefits of water retention and nutrients, requiring less water and fertilizer.

Saturday was the first time the market and its customers were able to see the product.

The market sells the ReGrow compost soil in a cubic-foot bag.
