Redmond man jailed in assault on Bend woman

A Redmond man was arrested early Thursday morning, accused of entering the Bend home of a woman he knew, awakening her, pulling a knife, raping her and threatening to kill her. Police said she broke free and ran to a neighbor’s home for help.

Officers were called to an unidentified northeast Bend home around 12:05 a.m. on a reported rape, said Lt. Ben Gregory.

An investigation found that the suspect, Jody Gene Brooks, 51, of Redmond, entered the home of a woman “known to him” just before midnight, Gregory said in a news release, not releasing more specific details due to the ongoing investigation.

Brooks “was not invited into the residence and the victim was sleeping when he made entry,” Gregory wrote.

The woman said Brooks had threatened her with a knife, held her against her will, sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her, Gregory said, but she was able to break free and ran to the home of a neighbor, who called police.

Officers found Brooks still inside the woman’s home, having cut his wrists and neck, causing superficial injuries, Gregory said.

Brooks was taken to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend for treatment, then lodged at the Deschutes County Jail on seven charges, including attempted murder and first-degree counts of kidnap, rape, sex abuse and burglary, as well unlawful use of a weapon. His bail totaled $527,000.

The woman also was treated at the Bend hospital and released, Gregory said.
