Redmond man struck, injured crossing Hwy. 97

A Redmond man was injured Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car while trying to cross on foot a five-lane stretch of Highway 97 south of Redmond, Oregon State Police reported.

Shortly before 10 a.m., Jason W. Brown, 28, from Redmond, was trying to cross Highway 97 near SW Tomahawk Avenue on foot from the east side of the highway to the west side, troopers said.

Brown cleared the two northbound lanes and was in the center paved median when he tried to cross the two southbound lanes, they said.

As he was in the left southbound lane, he was struck by a 1992 Toyota Camry driven by a 35-year-old Redmond man, who was unhurt in the collision.

Brown was flown by LifeFlight ambulance to St. Charles-Bend in Bend with what troopers called “serious, non-life threatening injuries.” A nursing supervisor said later he was in fair condition and undergoing surgery.

OSP was assisted at the scene by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond Police Department, Redmond Fire & Rescue, and ODOT. Senior Trooper William Duran is the lead investigator.

The highway was briefly blocked for the helicopter to land and fully reopened about an hour after the crash.
