A backyard burn pile that was believed to be out rekindled in windy conditions Monday afternoon in the Lone Pine area east of Terrebonne and spread to the space beneath a double-wide mobile home, causing extensive damage, officials said.

Crook County and Redmond firefighters responded around 3:30 p.m. to the reported structure fire on Lone Pine Road near the Knife River gravel pit, said Crook County Fire Marshal Casey Kump.

They arrived to find the fire burning underneath the trailer, and a Knife River crew with a water truck helping to keep it from spreading.

Kump said the fire was extinguished before burning through the floor, but plumbing and electrical lines beneath the mobile home were damaged, leaving the home uninhabitable. Firefighters also had to cut through the floor in several spots to finish putting the blaze out.

Losses were estimated at about $50,000. The homeowners declined Red Cross assistance, Kump said.
