Police drop badges, pick up aprons for fundraiser
Police officers from across the country will be headed to the nations capital in May for a bike ride to remember and honor those who have died in the line of duty.
Among the some 1,700 riders, a few from Central Oregon.
But before they can head out East, they need to raise $1,850.
Thursday night, police officers from across the state traded in the badge for an apron as they bussed tables for a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser.
Sunriver Brewing hosted the event.
“People get a little nervous when there are police officers around with handcuffs,” Sunriver Brewing Co-Owner Brian Cameron said. “It’s a great cause, so we like to support them.”
Eight Oregon law enforcement officers will be taking part in the Police Unity Tour, a 250-mile bike ride over three days, from New Jersey to Washington, D.C.
“It’s just a way for us police officers to give back to loved ones who have lost someone in the line of duty,” Sunriver Police Officer Evan Kennedy said.
This year, the Oregon delegation will ride in honor of Oregon City Reserve Officer Robert Libke, who was killed responding to a house fire on Nov. 4th, 2013.
