MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) – A 50-year-old Madras man was killed Saturday evening when his motorcycle and a Jeep Wrangler collided on Highway 97 on the north end of Madras, police said Sunday.

Officers responded shortly before 6 p.m. to the crash on North Highway 97 at Poplar Street, which connects highways 97 and 26, Detective Sergeant Steve Webb said. The two-lane stretch of Highway 97 has a 30 mph speed limit, he noted.

Police arrived to find a 1999 Jeep Wrangler sitting in the intersection, as well as a 2007 Yamaha YZF motorcycle with “a substantial amount of damage,” Webb said in a news release.

The motorcycle rider, Brian Farmer, 50, of Madras, sustained fatal injuries and died at the crash scene, Webb said. The Jeep driver, a 54-year-old Culver resident, was uninjured; police did not release his name.

An initial investigation found that Farmer was traveling southbound on the highway and the Jeep, heading north, was turning left onto Poplar Street at the time of the crash. Webb said the driver of the Jeep was cooperating with law enforcement and that the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for review.

Any witnesses to the crash were urged to call Madras police at 541-475-2424.

The crash and investigation closed Highway 97 for a time, with a detour in place.

Agencies assisting at the crash scene included the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Fire District No. 1, Jefferson County EMS and ODOT.
