Passenger seriously hurt in Powell Butte crash

A Bend woman was seriously injured and a Bend man was cited for driving with a suspended license after a rollover crash near Brasada Ranch in the Powell Butte area Sunday night, Crook County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. to the area of SW Shumway Road near Alfalfa Road on the reported injury crash, just north of the construction entrance to the resort northeast of Bend, said sheriff’s Sgt. Travis Jurgens.

Deputies arrived to find a 1996 Jeep Cherokee on its side off the east side of Shumway Road, Jurgens said. They determined the Jeep had been heading south on Shumway Road when it left the road and began to roll, crashing through a wire fence before coming to rest on its side.

Passenger Crystal Lee Lynn, 41, was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with what Jurgens described as non-life-threatening injuries. A nursing supervisor said Lynn was in serious condition late Sunday night.

The Jeep’s driver, Kristen David Loranger, 33, was unhurt in the crash, the sergeant said, adding that both occupants wearing seat belts at the time.

Loranger was issued a citation in lieu of custody on a misdemeanor charge of driving with suspended license. Jurgens said speed was believed to be a factor in the crash.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by U.S. Forest Service law enforcement, Oregon State Police, Crook County Fire and Rescue and Redmond Fire ambulance, Jurgens said.

It was Crook County’s second rollover crash in a weekend full of accidents around the region.

In the first, around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Gordon Hunrick, 34, of Prineville, sustained minor injuries when his 2006 BMX X5 left NW Woodward Road near Grimes Road in Prineville, crashed through a barbed-wire fence and began to roll, landing upright on its wheels.

Hunrick was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and went by personal vehicle to Pioneer Memorial Hospital for treatment. Deputy Dan Smith said the investigation was continuing, though no citations have been issued at this time.
