Shots fired at SW Redmond home; man arrested

Reports of shots fired in a southwest Redmond neighborhood Tuesday evening led to a resident’s arrest and the call-out of two bomb squad units after military munitions were found in the home, though they later were found to be non-functioning, police said Wednesday.

Police responded around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday to reports from worried neighbors of shots fired in the area of Southwest Reindeer Avenue and 33 rd Street, said Lt. Keith Knight.

Officers were setting up in the area when contact was made with Gabreial Norman Russell, 39, who was taken into custody without incident.

Knight said investigators found that Russell discharged a gun within the city limits and endangered those around him by doing so. Officers declined to specify the residence of the type of gun but said no injuries were reported, and a canvass of the area near the home Wednesday found no damage.

However, a search of the home turned “unknown military munitions,” Knight said in a news release. The Oregon State Police Arson and Explosives Unit was contacted to assist.

Photos of the munitions were sent to OSP, which determined it would respond to the scene, Knight said. OSP also called in an Air Force explosive ordinance disposal unit, he said, and the devices were later determined to be non-functioning.

Russell was taken to the Deschutes County Jail in Bend, where he remained held on $100,000 bail late Wednesday, facing charges of unlawful use of a weapon, recklessly endangering, possession of a prohibited weapon (a short-barreled firearm, menacing and disorderly conduct.

Knight said Redmond police also wanted to “remind the community that discharging firearms, bow and arrows, blow guns, pellet guns and similar items is illegal within the city limits.”
