SMART reading program seeks volunteers

KTVZ

SMART, Start Making A Reader Today is recruiting volunteer readers to read with children one hour per week in Redmond, La Pine, Gilchrist, Prineville, Powell Butte and Madras.

Volunteers are critical to SMART’s ability to bring the love of reading and learning to thousands of kids across Oregon each year.

To ensure we can successfully reach our goal of serving 9,500 students across the State of Oregon with reading support and books to keep in the 2014-15 school year, we’re launching a comprehensive, statewide volunteer recruitment push.

Our local goal is to recruit enough new volunteers to read with PreK, Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd grade children in Central Oregon Schools. Here is how you can help:

Sign up to volunteer with SMART for one hour a week at www.getSMARToregon.org, or call the local office to request a paper application, 541-355-5600.
Sign up to coordinate a program in Gilchrist, Prineville and Madras to ensure that those children have the opportunity to benefit from having a SMART Reader work with them each week. Log onto our website at www.getSMARToregon.org, or call the local office to request a paper application, 541-355-5600.
Central Oregon SMART Staff would love the opportunity to present at your company, professional associations you’re affiliated with, etc. Call us at 541-355-5600 to request a SMART presentation at your group meeting.

Thank you for your help. Together, we can create a stronger community by preparing our children for reading and learning success.

About SMART® (Start Making A Reader Today)

SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a statewide nonprofit organization that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We partner with schools around the state and engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK-3 rd grade children, helping to strengthen literacy skills and encourage a love of reading.

Over the past two decades, SMART has steadily grown to become Oregon’s largest volunteer literacy program. Children in the program receive 14 new books throughout the school year to keep and read with their families. Together, with support from communities and schools around the state, SMART is improving the reading capacity of Oregon’s children.
