The Dalles woman, 18, killed in Interstate 84 crash
An 18-year-old woman from The Dalles was killed early Sunday when her car left Interstate 84, went into a ditch and crashed into a tree, Oregon State Police reported.
OSP troopers were sent shortly before 6 a.m. to the reported single-vehicle crash on westbound I-84 near milepost 76, just west of the Rowena exit, said Sgt. Michael Berland.
A preliminary investigation found that Aileen Pineda-Garcia, 18, was heading west in a white 2011 Kia Rio when she left the road and went into the ditch, colliding with a tree, Berland said.
The teen, sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Berland said investigators concluded that speed and wet weather were likely contributing factors in the crash. Pineda-Garcia was wearing her seat belt at the time, the sergeant added.
The crash did not affect traffic on the freeway, Berland said. OSP was assisted at the scene by the Mid-Columbia Fire Department and ODOT.
