BALTIMORE, Maryland (WBAL) — A 74-year-old man who was assaulted while walking his dog in Fells Point over the weekend has died.
Police have captured the suspect in connection to this case and identified him as Timothy Clinedinst, who was taken into custody by Baltimore County Police.
According to police, David Philpot died on Sunday after an attack that put him in the hospital. 11 News obtained footage of the attack and spoke with Philpot’s wife on Sunday, and while she’s not ready to speak publicly yet, she described what happened to her husband.
The surveillance footage capturing the moments the 74-year-old man was assaulted in Fells Point may be disturbing to watch.
“Why would someone be that cruel? And an older man with his dog,” family friend Lynda Sebastianelli said.
Philpot’s wife told 11 News her husband, who told her what happened while he was at the hospital, was walking their dog around 2:45 p.m. Saturday when a man came up asking for money.
She said her husband told the man he didn’t have any, and after about one minute of conversation, the video shows the man pushing Philpot to the ground and attacking him. Philpot died at the hospital early Sunday morning.
“It’s really tragic. It’s really sad,” area resident Emily Kean said.
Lots of people in the area said they all knew Philpot and described him as a friendly, caring person who also did volunteer work in the community.
“It’s unbelievable. A kind of soul, like, we all loved him. He was gentle, sweet. He walked his dog every day right past our house on the other side of the street,” Sebastianelli said. “And how anyone could do this to him? Asking for money, and he didn’t have any.”
A community and family now mourning the loss of a man described as lively and full of kindness.
“This, whoever it is, destroyed a community, really, because everybody around here knows Dave and knows what a sweet man he was,” Philpot’s neighbor David Chebahtah said.
“For someone to do that over what, a quarter or a dollar or something? And be so angry that you would shove someone in the street. And an older man, who was the kindest man, I think, of anybody down here,” Sebastianelli said.
The official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, and police have released a picture of the suspect. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call police.
