Bend family cruises with vintage rides

This weekend, hundreds of classic cars will descend on Bend for the 2015 Flashback Cruz. Roadsters and hot rods are expected to blanket the grass of Drake Park through Sunday.

“I bought that car when I was 15 years old,” long-time classic car collector Harry Fagen said Friday. “I’ve had it the whole time, and just got into it — and I can’t get out of it.”

Fagen has been involved in the Flashback Cruz for many years, and is getting his family involved. His 5-year-old grandson, Joseph, loves cars just as much as his grandpa.

“Do you know what?” Joseph asked. “That car is from Helena, Montana. That’s where my grandpa found it.”

Fagen says Joseph helps him work on his vintage cars.

“He works all the time with me,” Fagen said. “He’s pretty sharp. He knows which way to turn a bolt to unscrew it.”

The 2015 Flashback Cruz runs through Sunday at Drake Park in downtown Bend, with “cruises” through the city and up to Mt. Bachelor.

“There’s nothing better than somebody saying, ‘Oh yeah, my granddad had a car like this…’, and then you start having a conversation and next thing you know they come and see you every year,” Fagen said.
