City of Prineville encourages residents to collect rainwater for gardening

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has declared a drought emergency for all of Central Oregon. Now, the City of Prineville is offering tips for gardening that could help conserve water.

The city posted to Facebook on Friday, informing residents on how to capture rainwater.

The city says a typical home’s rooftop can collect 500 gallons of water from just ½ inch of rain.

Here's how you can harvest rainwater:

- Place a rain barrel under your gutter downspout

- Use a fine screen to prevent debris & mosquitoes

- Store collected water for plants, lawns, and outdoor cleaning
