Deschutes Public Library celebrates grand opening of new Central Library

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Deschutes Public Library is continuing its weekend-long grand-opening celebration Sunday at the new Central Library in east Bend.

A free screening of the award-winning documentary “The Librarians” begins at 11:00a.m. and will be followed by a panel discussion with local librarians.

Oregon Poet Laureate Ellen Waterston will lead a writing workshop titled “At a Loss for Words” from 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. Registration is required. 

The Bella Acapella Choir will close out the celebration with a performance beginning at 3:00p.m.

All events are free and open to the public. 

The Central Library, located at 61956 SE Santorini Street, officially opened May 11th. The 103,343-square-foot building includes a children’s discovery space, MakerSpace, co-working area, public art, meeting rooms, and a café.

The new library was funded through a bond measure approved by Deschutes County voters in 2020.

KTVZ News plans to attend several of Sunday’s events and will bring you a closer look at the celebration and the community’s response to the new library.
