‘It’s wonderful for us’: Powell Butte Christian Church celebrates the 78th annual Lord’s Acre Day
POWELL BUTTE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Saturday was the 78th annual Lord's Acre Day at Powell Butte Christian Church, filled with food and fun.
The original idea was that each farm family of the church would donate an acres worth of their produce to the Lord's work. It's been a Powell Butte tradition since 1947. Visitors and participants enjoyed pies by the slice, a B.B.Q. lunch, and a 5-K and 10-K.
Lord's Acre Committee Chairman Clay Penhallow told us how the proceeds from the fundraiser are used.
"It's wonderful for us," he said. "It's our annual fundraiser, and we use those funds for several things. But we always tithed to the missions first, and then we use it to some of our major maintenance projects. Right now, we're still working on a mortgage, so some of the funds will go towards that."
In the early days of the gathering, which counts among its best-known attendees future president John F. Kennedy and wife Jackie, the proceeds from the fundraiser helped build the church building. The event typically attracts 1,000 to 1,200 people.
