‘I really enjoy the books’: Seven Peaks School in Bend hosts area’s Battle of the Books reading competition

(Update: Adding video, comments from students, staff)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Young readers were tested on their reading comprehension skills Saturday morning at Seven Peaks School. Ninety bookworms from the Bend-La Pine area tackled the local competition in the Oregon Battle of the Books, a statewide reading challenge.

Students from third through fifth grade read up to 16 books. The competition was divided into teams of four, competing against other schools in the region, to see who knows the books the best.

The Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program, sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. The program encourages students to read a selection of books, collaborate with their peers, and participate in exciting, quiz-style competitions.

The Battle of the Books regional manager for Bend, Ellie Eliopulos, talked about the importance behind the program.

"It also fosters just a sense of team among students," she said. "Many of these students, you know, might not participate in sports competitions, and it gives them an opportunity to compete with other students in the area."

Fourth-grader Jackson Edwards said, "I really enjoy the books. I think that's my favorite."

Fifth-grader Emme Eliopulos said, "I like working hard to do something that's able pay off easily -- so, not easily, but yeah."

Fifth-grader Marley Rudolf said, "I like having fun with friends, while reading. I like having a competition while we're doing it."

There will be another competition for the sixth through eighth graders next Saturday, and the final state competition takes place next month in Salem.

"We are honored to be hosting the Oregon Battle of the Books this year, said Dr. Sam Adams, head of school. "This event aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering a love for reading and learning among students. It's a fantastic opportunity for young minds to come together, celebrate literature, and showcase their knowledge."
