High Desert Workweek Launch: Clear Monday Commute, Midweek Rain Chances, & Rare Blue Moon

Whether you are wrapping up the weekend or getting ready to head out the door for the Monday morning commute, we have a clear and bright start to the workweek. However, a major shift is in the cards: the National Weather Service is now tracking precipitation chances directly into the tri-county area by Wednesday, followed by a much cooler system next weekend that could bring high mountain snow showers back to the Cascades.

Sunday Evening and Night Sky Outlook

  • Sky Conditions: Mostly clear to perfectly clear across the entire region.
  • Winds: North winds around 5 to 10 mph early this evening, completely settling down and becoming light and variable after dark.
  • The Blue Micromoon: Keep an eye on the southeastern sky just after sunset. Tonight brings a rare calendar coincidence—the second full moon of May, making it a Blue Moon. It is also a "Micromoon" (the opposite of a Supermoon), meaning it is at its furthest point from Earth and will look slightly smaller and dimmer than average. Visibility tonight will be 100% ideal.
  • Overnight Temperatures: Not quite as cold as previously expected. Valley lows for Bend, Redmond, Prineville, and Madras will hold in the mid-30s to lower 40s.
  • Cascade Slopes: Clear and quiet for Sisters, Sunriver, and La Pine with overnight lows dipping into the lower 30s to lower 40s.

Monday Morning Out-The-Door

  • The Commute: Expect a beautiful, crisp, and bright start to the workweek. You will want the sunglasses immediately for the drive, along with a light jacket.
  • Winds: Calm to start the morning, becoming northeast at 5 to 10 mph by tomorrow afternoon.
  • Monday Afternoon: Wall-to-wall sunshine pushes valley temperatures comfortably into the lower to mid-70s. Higher elevation areas and Cascade resorts, including Mt. Bachelor, will see pleasant daytime highs in the lower 60s to lower 70s.

The Midweek Shift and Weekend System

  • Tuesday Peak: Partly cloudy and warm. Highs peak in the upper 70s to lower 80s across the valleys.
  • Wednesday Rain Chances: The dry streak breaks. Expect mostly cloudy skies with a 20% chance of rain showers during the day, jumping to a 40% chance Wednesday night for the valleys. The East Slopes will see a steady 20% chance of showers through Wednesday night.
  • Next Weekend Mountain Snow: After a clear and cooler Thursday and Friday, a stronger system arrives Saturday. The East Slopes of the Cascades currently face a 50% chance of rain and high mountain snow showers on Saturday, with temperatures dropping significantly.

High Desert Lifestyle and Resource Impacts

Wildfire and Drought Status: While Stage 1 Public Use Fire Restrictions remain strictly in effect, the introduction of a 40% chance of valley rain showers Wednesday night and a 50% chance of mountain moisture next weekend provides a much-needed outlook for our dry soils. Keep fire safety top of mind until that moisture actually hits the dirt.

  • Agriculture and Livestock: Tonight's slightly warmer mid-30s to 40s lows reduce the immediate frost risk for alfalfa growers and cattle ranching. Keep an eye on Tuesday's brief heat peak before the welcome arrival of increased humidity and shower potential on Wednesday.
  • Recreation and Rivers: Monday and Tuesday offer prime, dry windows for paddling the Deschutes or trail running before clouds and rain chances arrive midweek. Next weekend's mountain recreation will require colder weather gear as high elevation snow showers enter the forecast.
  • Photography and Sightseeing: Tonight is your headline event for astrophotography with the Blue Micromoon under completely clear skies. Tomorrow brings high-contrast, clear visibility for capturing the volcanic peaks before cloud cover increases Tuesday night.

I am monitoring the timing of Wednesday’s rainfall and next weekend's mountain snow potential closely. Keep your KTVZ Local Alert Weather App open on your mobile device for live interactive radar updates as this active pattern develops!
