Rain, thunderstorms Sunday before a drier Labor Day in Central Oregon

CENTRAL OREGON — A cool and wet Sunday is ahead for Central Oregon before conditions improve in time for Labor Day.

Showers and thunderstorms remain possible Saturday evening, followed by a chance of rain showers overnight. Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville have a 50% chance of precipitation, with overnight lows falling into the 40s. Around a tenth of an inch of rain is possible, with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday brings the highest rain chances of the extended weekend. Patchy morning fog is possible before rain showers move through the region. Thunderstorms are also possible during the afternoon.

The National Weather Service puts the chance of precipitation at 90% Sunday for Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville, with highs only reaching the lower to mid-60s.

Cooler and potentially wetter conditions are expected along the east slopes of the Cascades, including Sisters, La Pine and Sunriver. Sunday highs there will generally range from the upper 40s to upper 50s, with some valley locations reaching the lower 60s. Rainfall amounts of less than a quarter of an inch are expected Sunday, except for potentially higher amounts in thunderstorms.

Labor Day brings a significant improvement for much of Central Oregon. Sunshine returns to Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville, with highs in the mid-60s to lower 70s. Areas along the east slopes of the Cascades will remain cooler with partly cloudy skies.

The warming trend continues Tuesday through Thursday. Highs return to the 70s Tuesday before climbing into the upper 70s and 80s across parts of Central Oregon Wednesday and Thursday.

Another slight chance of rain showers returns toward the end of the week.
