Sun and 80s for the Weekend, But Severe Monday Winds Loom for Central Oregon
Central Oregon is serving up a spectacular start to the holiday weekend, locking in a warm, clear pattern for Saturday and Sunday. If you are planning to fire up the grill, hit the trails, or explore the Cascades, the next 48 hours are your absolute prime window.
According to the National Weather Service, a major weather shift arrives on Memorial Day Monday, bringing severe wind gusts before temperatures challenge us with rain and mountain snow on Tuesday.
The Holiday Forecast Breakdown
Tonight will be mostly clear and cool. Temperatures will drop into the lower to mid 40s across the valleys, and into the upper 30s near the mountains. Northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph could gust up to 30 mph this evening before tapering off and becoming light overnight.
Sunday is the pick of the weekend. Expect pure sunshine all day as temperatures climb into the lower to mid 80s for Bend, Redmond, Prineville, and Madras. Higher elevation areas like Sisters and Sunriver will see comfortable mid 60s to mid 70s. Winds will remain mostly light, though afternoon gusts could reach up to 25 mph.
Memorial Day Monday keeps the warm temperatures with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, but the wind becomes the headline story. A powerful system approaching the coast will trigger severe south winds. Expect gusts soaring up to 45 mph across the high desert valleys and reaching up to 50 mph along the Cascade slopes.
Tuesday brings a major reality check. A cold front drops temperatures dramatically, keeping highs in the 40s in the mountains and the upper 50s to low 60s in the valleys. The Cascades face a 90 percent chance of rain and mountain snow showers, while the tri-county valleys see a 50 percent chance of rain and potential thunderstorms.
Weekend Recreation Outlook
Mountain Passes and Travel: Saturday night and Sunday will feature clear roads, great visibility, and beautiful daytime weather. However, if you are traveling on Memorial Day Monday, use caution. Southwest wind gusts up to 50 mph will make driving high-profile vehicles and towing trailers difficult through the passes.
Cascade Lakes and Boating: Sunday morning will be ideal for fishing, paddling, or boating with calm waters and warm sun. Monday is a different story. High winds mean dangerous whitecaps and blow-over risks, so lake recreation is highly discouraged on the holiday itself.
Deschutes River and Trails: The weather is warm and beautiful for local trails this weekend. If you are camping or hanging out outside on Monday, make sure to secure your tents, tie down loose patio furniture, and protect your eyes from blowing dust on open trails.
Protecting the High Desert: Safety and Patience
With thousands of neighbors and visitors sharing our region this weekend, keeping Central Oregon safe takes a collective community effort.
Our high desert brush and grass are dry right now. Introducing 45 to 50 mph wind gusts on Monday means any single spark can turn into a fast-moving wildfire in minutes. If you are camping where fires are permitted, never leave them unattended. With Monday's wind forecast, consider skipping the campfire entirely on the holiday to prevent flying embers. Always drown fires completely with water until they are cold to the touch.
On the roads, ensure safety chains are not dragging on the asphalt, as a single spark on the shoulder of Highway 97 or Highway 20 can ignite dry grass instantly. Also, never park a hot exhaust system over tall, dry grass.
Expect heavy traffic through the tri-county corridors all weekend long. Give yourself an extra 20 minutes to reach your destination, keep two hands on the wheel to account for Monday's crosswinds, and watch closely for deer and elk during dawn and dusk.
Beyond the sunshine and the mountain views, this weekend carries a solemn purpose. As we enjoy the incredible beauty of Central Oregon, let's take a moment to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Let's look out for one another and have a safe, peaceful weekend.
