Winter Alerts for snow and wintry mix through Friday morning

We can call this the Valentine’s Day storm of 2024. There are currently winter weather alerts for the region that need to be addressed.  A Winter Storm Warning is in place until 4 am Friday for southern and western Deschutes and western Jefferson Counties for 3 – 6” of snow by the time Friday morning arrives. There may be higher amounts closer to the east slopes of the Cascades so be aware of the dangerous travel conditions.  The Crest of the Cascades will see feet of snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras until 10 am Thursday. This is for 1 – 3” of snow, mixed with rain. This weather scenario is going to possibly produce some icy roads and therefore tricky travel. The temps in the afternoon will support the rain/snow mix, then overnight black ice may form and snow may fall at times covering the ice.  Not pleasant during the next few days in the region for travelers.

There is an area of low pressure that is approaching the coast and is supplying the moisture out ahead of the center. This is contributing to the snow today. The temps are such that the snow will be wet and heavy so if we do get a few pockets of heavy snow in the advisory or warned area, there may be some power outages as tree limbs may fall on power lines due to the weight of the snow.

The snow and mix continue Thursday morning, then taper off slightly at lower elevations. In the mountains will see the snow pile up through the day, a couple of feet of snow may accumulate. Snow riders will be pleased, but getting through the passes may be very difficult and dangerous.

A break on Friday then some more snow/rain possible Saturday.  We will be hovering around the low 40s Saturday therefore we will once again be dealing with a wintry mix.

Make sure to monitor our Red Banner above for any changes in the weather alerts.
