Dangerous weather conditions expected today and tomorrow

Hot temperatures again today. The dense smoke over our region will limit some of our daytime heating, just by a degree or two. There were some possible records set to be broken today but it’ll be tight now with the smoke. Highs today will still be in the mid and upper 90s. Lows tonight in the 50s and 60s. There is little relief in those overnight hours from the heat today. Heat Advisories out for our region until tomorrow.

Smoke will be unhealthy to very unhealthy for our region today. Winds from the southeast and east the last couple days have made it dangerous to be outside in some areas. Air Quality Alerts out for Deschutes and Crook County until further notice. Avoid being outside if you can, weak a mask if you must.

The ridge of high pressure is still the dominating pattern in our forecast right now. It’s slowly breaking down and moving east. A low pressure disturbance in the sky is helping to break it down this weekend, starting today. But, as it does that, it will bring some cloud cover. The chance for an isolated dry thunderstorm cannot be entirely excluded. Better chances will be to our south but be aware of it late this afternoon and tomorrow. Gusty conditions will also accompany this feature. Fire weather danger is heightened at this time. A Red Flag, or Fire Weather Warning has been released for our area for today and tomorrow because of this.

Potential for extreme wildfire behavior for the new wildfires starts to our east will be at a high. It has the potential to be a very dangerous situation. The index used to measure the potential for erratic wildfire behavior is a scale of 2 to 6. We are reaching up to that highest level today and tomorrow. These fires have grown rapidly due to the hot and dry conditions this week. The Rail Ridge fire is nearing 83,000 acres as of last night. It has a good chance of reaching “mega-wildfire” acreage of 100 thousand acres in the next day or two.

There are a number of alerts/advisories out for our area. Refer to the banner at the top of the website frequently for the most updated information.

Please, be safe the next few days. Have a great weekend.
