Brisk winds today generated smoky skies; showers stayed north

KTVZ

The winds that arrived ahead of the cold front today did increase the fire behavior in the Cascades and around the region. The smoke was very visible today and will remain so over the weekend.  Rainy conditions were mainly across the central and northern coastal areas then migrated east through the northern portion of Oregon.

The temperatures today were in the 70s, which is above our normal upper 60s, and we should remain milder than normal for the next several days.  Highs on Saturday are likely to be in the middle to upper 70s and Sunday will be in the low 80s in a number of locations. This will be the case as we head into the new work week as little change in the overall pattern is expected.

The sunny and dry pattern will be excellent for any outdoor activities planned this weekend. This lingering warmth will be good news for any events that are occurring so get out and enjoy.  The cooler conditions are going to arrive, but for now there is a lingering summer-type temperature profile, so we may as well take advantage of it.

The only fly in the ointment over the weekend will be the smoky skies.  There are a number of fires still puffing out smoke from the interior and some perimeter breaches have been experience with the windy conditions today. The work is being done very well by regional firefighters but the smoke is still there. Remember, when a fire is contained, or mostly contained, it doesn’t mean that the fires are out.  Smoke still rises and dissipates into the area so be aware of the air quality reports and prepare properly.
