Yellow Alert Day, isolated storms, very warm weekend ahead

There will be isolated storms pushing from south to north during the late day time frame that may generate some gusty winds along with lightning. There is a chance for dry lightning today to the east and conventional storms along 97. The issue with the dry lightning will be the potential for wildfire ignition. We have issued a Yellow Local Alert Weather Day into the evening for the storms. If the storms were forecast to become severe we would have issued a Red Alert Day.

Once the storms pass through and exit the region by around 11pm, Central Oregon will begin a dry period. The variable each day will be the temperatures, but the sky conditions will be defined each day as mostly sunny.

Thursday will see the mercury in the thermometer hit the upper 70s, considerably lower than the upper 80s today, but still about 10° above normal for late May.

The 80s return on Friday as the ridge of high pressure builds back over the region. Actually it just flattened out a bit Thursday but “rebuilds” Friday and Saturday.

Saturday looks to be the warmest day of the period as highs will top out close to 90. The record high for Bend on the 31st of May is 89 set in 1922, so if we hit 90 we rewrite the books.

Sunday brings back the cooler pattern and a deep pocket of cooler air drops in from the Gulf of Alaska late Sunday and we

only reach the low 70s Sunday and the middle 60s Monday and Tuesday. Some rain is expected, but currently there is a bit of conflict with the models, so I am going with mostly cloudy for now with a slight chance for some rain.

Please stay safe.
