The official first day of summer arrives with cool and rainy weather
Today is the summer solstice, marking the official first day of summer! It is when the northern hemisphere is tilted closest to the sun, meaning we see the longest daylight hours and shortest nighttime hours.
Mother Nature has her own plans for us. Temperatures are cooling into the mid 50s and low 60s today. It will be breezy with winds gusting between 20-30mph all day long. Rain is expected to return in the mid afternoon. We’ll see periods of rain into the night.
Overnight, lows will drop into the 30s with areas in Southern Deschutes and Sisters dipping sub-freezing. We might not be cold enough for long enough to see frost Saturday morning, but you might want to think about protecting your gardens in those areas nonetheless in case your backyard happens to be a bit colder after today's rainfall.
Showers will continue tomorrow, but clear overnight. Sunday should stay mostly dry, with clouds clearing through the day.
We are in need of good, measurable rainfall. On average, by this time of the month, we would have seen around 0.50” of rain for the month of June in Bend. We have reported just a couple hundredths of an inch. This rain, although untimely, is much needed as we are now in the beginning of fire season.
Saturday is expected to be the coolest day of the chilly weekend, with highs below 60 which is over 15 degrees below normal for this time of year.
Summer-feel conditions will return next week.
Have a happy Friday and a great weekend!
