Deschutes County Seeks Applicants for Interim Sheriff Role as Van der Kamp Resigns

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — With Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp set to resign at the end of July, the county's Board of Commissioners has launched the process to appoint an interim replacement to serve the remainder of his term.

Under Oregon law, the Board of Commissioners is required to fill the vacancy with an interim sheriff until a new sheriff is elected.

To be considered for the interim role, candidates must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be a resident of Deschutes County
  • Provide proof of certification — or eligibility for certification — by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training

Qualified individuals interested in applying must submit all required materials by Friday, July 11 at 5 p.m. Details and application instructions can be found on the county’s website at www.deschutes.org/interimsheriff.

The Board has indicated it aims to make the appointment before Van der Kamp officially steps down on July 31.
