Local Alert Day: Storms develop late today, frequent lightning and increased fire risk

A Local Alert Day has been issued for today as showers and storms are expected to develop late in the afternoon. These storms will have the potential to generate gusty winds, frequent lightning, and brief heavy downpours.

There is a Red Flag Warning issued for all of the Tri-Counties for the rest of the day and evening due to the storms. There have been numerous new fire starts from yesterday’s thunderstorms and the winds generated by today’s storms will increase the spread of the fires and inhibit the ability of firefighters on the ground and in the air to battle the fires.

This will be the beginning of several days in a row with showers and or storms. Storms will exit north before midnight, but more wet weather and storms are on the way over the weekend and into next week.

Saturday will be a mix of some clouds and sunshine as there is a chance for some storms to develop in the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid-80s, allowing the atmosphere to churn up a bit and help with the stormy development. Not a wash out in any way, but late in the day we need to keep an eye to the sky for developing storm clouds and listen for the rumble of thunder.
Sunday will be similar to Saturday with some storms returning in the heat of the day. The mercury in the thermometer is only going to hit the middle to upper 70s, so the chance of afternoon heating of the storms will be less. Still, I expect a few storms to show up late in the day.
Monday will be rainy and stormy. Highs will only be in the low 70s under mostly cloudy skies. The rain will be likely most of the day and should be off and on. The chance for some thunderstorms is also on the table.
Tuesday will continue the wet pattern with showers off and on. The cooler air will more than likely only support showers, but a rogue thunderstorm is possible.
Rainy conditions are also possible Wednesday. Keep the rain gear handy next week, we should be adding a nice amount of rain to our dry environment. Soaking soils but we may see some minor flooding due to the persistent pattern of precipitation.
Please, Stay safe.
