October starts out chilly and rainy

(KTVZ, Bend Ore.) Lingering showers into the night and one more round of light rain expected Thursday.  Highs today will be in the low 60s and upper 50s as the chilly pocket of air remains. Dreary may be a good way to define the afternoon.

The area of low pressure off the coast of western Canada is running the show. The bands of showers that are pushing out from the center are arriving in Oregon. The flow within the line of rain is from southwest to north northeast, while the entire line is moving east.

For the most part the impressive lines of showers that arrive on the coast get absorbed by the mountainous terrain. By the time the rain arrives in the high desert, we are looking at scattered showers.

The cooler than normal pocket of air is expected to linger into the weekend. Highs from Thursday through Sunday are going to be in the low to middle 60s. Normal high for this time of year should be the upper 60s, so we are not far off, it just feels cooler since we were nearly 90 on Saturday.

The wet pattern ends Thursday with as the low begins to drift south and dissipate. The trough of low pressure, the elongated area of low pressure, will extend well south into Nevada Friday.  Another low develops on the southern end of this feature and will provide rain south and east of Oregon.

The flow of air will continue to arrive from the northwest over the weekend so the cooler pattern remains.  A ridge of high pressure pushes well north just off the coast and should eventually provide a bit of a warm up.

The mercury in the thermometer will return to the upper 60s and low 70s next week.
