Meteorological Summer begins today with sunshine and above normal temperatures

KTVZ

Bend, Ore (KTVZ) – The Meteorological Summer is defined by the three warmest months of the year, June, July and August.  The Astronomical Summer is defined by the relationship between the earth and the sun, Summer Solstice to Autumnal Equinox. So why the difference?  Exact dates for the Meteorological Summer define the climatological record keeping aspect of meteorology since the dates are exactly the same. The Astronomical Summer varies a few days each year. It may not sound like much, but in the world of science and climatology, it matters.

As for the weather this week, expect to feel like summer through the work week. The normal highs for this first week of June are around 70° and we will be above that all week. Highs on Tuesday will be the warmest of the week, reaching the low 80s. Plenty of sunshine and light winds will also be part of the equation Tuesday as well.

Some light rain is expected to cross the region as a weak short wave of energy crossed Central Oregon. This will allow the temperatures to drop, mainly because of the cloud cover, and there is a slight chance for passing shower early in the day. There may be an isolated thunderstorm in eastern Oregon, but currently, the forecast is looking quiet with respect to electricity in the Tri-Counties.

Highs Wednesday will still be above normal, even with the slight chance for a shower, reaching the middle 70s. Conditions return to partly cloudy with highs in the middle 70s both Thursday and Friday.

A cold front arrives with little fanfare on Saturday as we see an increase in cloud cover. The chance for rain is not part of the forecast at the moment, just a moisture starved frontal boundary that will cross early in the day Saturday.

We will only reach the middle to upper 60s both Saturday and Sunday for the first weekend of June.

Warmer weather returns next Monday and Tuesday with highs in the middle 70s.

Please, Stay safe.
