Bend-La Pine free summer meals set to begin

KTVZ

The Bend-La Pine Schools Summer Meals and Summer Reading program begins Monday, June 15 in the Bend area and Monday, June 22 in La Pine.

The program serves hundreds of local students healthy, tasty meals each weekday at 11 locations throughout the region.

Five of those sites will also host Lunch & Learn summer reading programs, in which students can continue to hone reading skills during the summer months. A teacher will be available at each Lunch & Learn site to encourage and coach students. Participating children can earn books and other incentives by reading through the summer.

The free meal program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, is expected to serve more than 30,0000 meals to children during summer break. All children, ages 18 and younger, are welcome to receive a free meal. Lunches include a sandwich or hot entre, fruit, vegetable, low fat milk and an occasional dessert.

Parents are encouraged to attend and may bring their own lunches, or purchase a meal for $4 (parents may not share free meals with their children). Registration is not required.

The meal program will take place at the following locations and times:
