Deschutes County has a poverty rate below the state and national figures just released for 2016, but the same is not true for Crook or Jefferson counties, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday.

The latest income and poverty estimates show 14 percent of the 315 million U.S. residents live in poverty, while the percentage is 13.4 percent for Oregon’s 4 million residents..

Deschutes County’s poverty rate is 10.6 percent, or 19,113 residents. In Crook County, it’s a 14.2 percent poverty rate, or nearly 3,200 people, Jefferson County’s rate is 17.3 percent, of 3,838 of the 22,143 residents.

Malheur County has the highest poverty rate, at almost 23 percent.
