A 64-year-old Bend man was killed early Sunday when he lost control of his pickup and collided head-on with a semi-truck on icy Highway 97 in Klamath County, Oregon State Police reported.

A preliminary investigation found that a red 2000 Ford F-250 driven by Roy Everett Smith was heading south on Highway 97 near milepost 226, between Chemult and Chiloquin, when he lost control of his pickup on the icy roadway, said OSP Sergeant Yvette Shephard.

The pickup crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a green 2016 Kenworth semi-truck and trailer driven by Jeanne McJunkin, 65, of Cheney, Washington.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving efforts by medics.

McJunkin and her passenger, William McJunkin, 64, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to an area hospital by medical personnel.

OSP was assisted at the scene by the Chemult Fire Department and ODOT.
