What You Need to Know: Severe Weather Threat Upgraded to “Slight” for Central Oregon

KTVZ-TV

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Central Oregonians are being urged to stay weather-aware and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities as the threat for severe thunderstorms across the region has been upgraded to a “slight” risk.

Local Alert Chief Meteorologist John Carroll is warning that storms developing across Central Oregon Thursday could bring dangerous, rapidly changing conditions capable of creating hazardous situations with little warning.

Carroll says now is the time for residents and visitors to rethink outdoor plans and prepare for quickly deteriorating weather.

"Boating, camping, fishing, hiking, and other extended outdoor recreation activities are strongly discouraged unless people have a reliable way to receive weather alerts and can immediately seek sturdy shelter if storms approach," said Carroll.

Lightning can strike miles away from the center of a storm, making campgrounds, lakes and open terrain especially dangerous.

Residents are also encouraged to secure outdoor furniture and other items that could become airborne during strong winds. Patio furniture and lightweight objects can quickly turn into hazards during severe thunderstorms.

Pet owners should plan to bring animals indoors before storms arrive. Loud thunder, lightning, and strong winds can frighten pets and increase the risk of them escaping.

Drivers should also be prepared for sudden downpours, reduced visibility, ponding water on roads, and gusty crosswinds. Travelers heading into rural or mountainous areas are advised to monitor weather conditions closely before departing.

The safest place during a thunderstorm is inside a sturdy building or hard-topped vehicle. Open shelters, tents, and covered picnic areas do not provide adequate protection from lightning.

You can stay weather aware by having multiple ways to receive alerts, including the Local Alert Weather App.
