BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office is issuing a warning about a recent increase in vehicle break-ins and theft at local trailheads and parks. The crimes of opportunity have been reported at popular recreation sites, including Phil's Trailhead, Shevlin Park, Maston, Pine Nursery and Big Sky, as spring weather brings more people outdoors.

Deputies have observed a rise in calls concerning trespass into parked cars and stolen items at various recreation locations throughout Deschutes County in recent weeks. This increase is typical each spring when trail use grows, making these sites more attractive targets for thieves who often look for unlocked doors or items left in plain view.

To help prevent theft, the Sheriff's Office advises residents to avoid leaving valuables in their vehicles whenever possible. If items must be brought, they should be stored out of sight in a glove box, center console or trunk.

The Sheriff's Office also encourages people to always lock their vehicles, even for brief stops and to report any suspicious activity observed at trailheads or parking areas.

As the recreation season increases, deputies will maintain regular patrols at trailheads and parks. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable time outdoors and recommends following the advice to "Lock it, Hide It, Hike & Ride On!"
