Wintry pattern on the way to start the new year

After a mild December, the area will be turning the page this week as a series of cold systems move over the region. The chance for a light rain snow mix precipitation Tuesday will be the beginning of the wintry pattern for the Pacific Northwest.

The temperatures at night will be cold enough to support snow while we will be mild each afternoon for rain. The issues with this scenario is the ice that will form from the wet afternoons and cold nights.

Tuesday will see a rain and snow mix in the evening that will translate to some snow into Wednesday morning. Not too much is expected below 4500 feet, but the mountains will see a nice dose of snow to help the season along.

Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with a few showers off and on, mainly in the morning. Thursday will be on the dry side, then rain and snow return for the first weekend of 2024.

Rain and snow mingle on Friday but we should see mostly snow over the weekend. Amounts are yet to be determined, but our mountains look to get several inches of new powder.  Lower elevations may see a few inches, but as mentioned, this has yet to be etched in stone.

Bottom line is, winter is finally here if you define winter by snow.
