Winter has returned, colder than normal pattern into the weekend

The snow began last night around 8 pm in Bend and continued off and on through the night. The unofficial totals are trickling in, but generally there is about 1- 3” of snow on the grassy areas and fields.  Roads are slushy and wet due to the 80° weather we had Tuesday, but I expect to see some icy roads overnight as the mercury will be in the 20s tonight.

This is a very late snow event, but not the latest snow the region has seen. The records I rely upon are from the National Weather Service Nowdata site and are fairly comprehensive.  Here are the latest dates that measurable snow has fallen...Bend got 1” of snow on May 23rd, 1953; Redmond had 0.5” of snow on May 20th 1962. So although not likely, this April snow event today is not unprecedented and we may still see some snow in May. In fact, some records have flakes falling in June and July, but nothing measurable.

Bridges and overpasses ice up first as they cool from the top and underneath, so icy conditions occur on elevated surfaces first. The elevation in the region also influences the icy potential. Awbrey Butte may ice up as you drive toward the top for example.  So be aware of the potential for slick and icy conditions tonight. The slush on the roads today is likely to ice up tonight.

There should be a few lingering snow showers Friday, then we are expecting a dry period over the weekend. The mountains will see snow into at least Saturday, so if you are traveling through the passes, be prepared for snow.

High desert locations are going to dry out Saturday and warmer weather is on the way. Sunday we hit 50, Tuesday we reach 60 and Thursday we are back in the 70s.
