Winter weather alerts issued for the area
A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the eastern half of the viewing area, and a Winter Weather advisory is now in place for parts of Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties.
Snow will be impacting the region in waves over the next two days with the bulk of the snow falling east of 97. Although southern Deschutes County is not included in the alerts as of 2 pm Monday, there will still be snow falling and impacting travel. Totals are difficult to nail down but generally the impacts will be widespread with the Ochoco Mtns. possibly getting near 6+ inches while the rest of the high desert will receive 2 - 5". Today the snow will end around 7 pm, but not before adding a couple of inches to the region east of 97.

The second wave of snow begins Tuesday afternoon and will provide the final couple of inches of snow for the week. The shield of snow will exit the area by Tuesday evening, but the alerts are in place as roads will still be troublesome through the morning hours of Wednesday.
There is a chance for some spotty snow showers on Wednesday as an area of low pressure spins off the coast and provides us with more wet and cold weather for one more day. Thursday will be the end of the snowy pattern but the cold air will remain.
The other feature this week will be the cold pattern, as mentioned above. The mercury in the thermometer will not rise much above the middle 30s all week and dip into the teens each night. This will not allow for much melting or drying out of the roadways so the cinders and crushed lava stones ODOT spreads will be our friend for traction in most side streets. Major roads will clear due to the traffic.
This cold weather shows no signs of relenting over the next seven days, so prepare for a wintry week ahead and into the weekend. Currently the end of the work week and into the weekend looks dry and cold.
Ski resorts are seeing more than likely very pleased with the return of the snow. Please be careful traveling through the mountain passes and to the resorts.
Please stay safe.
