Cold and snowy pattern continues

Winter Weather Alerts are in place through the region as Central Oregon deals with cold and snowy weather.  The Warning is for most of Crook County and eastern sections of Jefferson and Deschutes Counties until 10 am Wednesday morning.  Another 3 – 5” of snow is possible. The Winter Weather Advisory has been extended until 4 am Thursday morning. Snow will increase over the mountains Wednesday and translate to the lower elevations, especially along 97. 2 - 6” of new snow is expected in the Advisory.  There is more snow on the way later this week, so I would expect new or updated alerts to follow.

The snow today is going to be for about a 3 – 5 hour period that will impact Central Oregon. The hazards will be reduced visibility while it is snowing and the slick and dangerous roads through the night.  The flow of snow is arriving from the southwest, around the edge of an area of low pressure off the coast. This is working in concert with the “atmospheric river” that has developed and drifted north.  Expect this pattern to change Wednesday as the river shifts east, but the low is still able to get the snow to our region, so the snow is expected to return Wednesday.

Wednesday will see some scattered snow showers arriving from the west. The Cascades will take the lion’s share of the snow, but some snow showers are expected to speckle the region through the day.  The totals will not be impressive, but the roads will still be slick.

Thursday will start out on the dry side, but another wave of snow is likely to overtake the region overnight into Friday morning. This snow may be heavy at times, mainly south, but the overall snow event will generate a few more inches in the area by Friday morning.  The roads for your Friday commute will be impacted so prepare for what may be a very slow commute.

Saturday we may see a lingering shower or two, but generally the area will be much less influenced by snow.  Sunday, we dry out, but another round of snow is on the docket for Monday.  Not expecting much but the snowy pattern is not done.

The other concern for the region will be the cold pattern.  The area will not get much above the freezing mark all week with afternoon highs hovering in the low to middle 30s.  Overnights will be in the teens each of the next several days, except for Thursday morning in Bend, where we will be in the low 20s.

Please stay safe.
