Summer-like weather Thursday and Friday, rain and isolated storms late Friday into Saturday

Saturday will be a Local Alert Weather Day with some isolated thunderstorms overnight Friday into Saturday. Along with the storms will be moderate rain and possibly some mountain snow. The rain, combined with the snowmelt from the well above normal temperatures Thursday and Friday, may lead to minor flooding of creeks and streams in Central Oregon.

We issue these alerts not to alarm but to inform you about weather that will impact your day and help you plan out your activities. Below is a link to a more detailed description of our latest feature from the KTVZ weather team that helps keep you safe and informed.

Here is the forecast into the weekend. Thursday will be the warmest day of the week with highs near 80 and plenty of sunshine.  The ridge of high pressure responsible for the warmth will peak over Central Oregon Thursday but the warm conditions continue into Friday. The winds will also be light and the air dry.  While all this is going on, a deep trough of low pressure will dive along the coast and cool the area significantly Saturday.

Sunny skies and warm weather will continue Friday as highs reach the upper 70s to low 80s ahead of a rainy night with a few storms before midnight.

Saturday the rain will be cold with highs only reaching the middle 50s. There may be some very high-level snow on the Ochoco Mountains, the Cascades as well as the buttes near Paulina Lakes. Other than the mountains, the snow will only accumulate on grassy areas above 5500 feet since the 80-degree days Thursday and Friday have warmed the ground as well as the air. Slick roads early Saturday through the mountain passes will present travel issues, so allow extra time to get to your destination.

The rain Saturday will be light to moderate, but steady so keep the umbrella handy. The hint of snow in La Pine or Sisters is also in the forecast, but again, not much confidence in that portion of the forecast since it will above the freezing mark all but a couple of hours.  Most of the rain will be over by early afternoon, but the clouds will linger.

Sunday will be a day of drying and warming as we start a run of above normal temperatures beginning Monday. Gusty winds are likely to persist Sunday through Monday. Temperatures return to the 70s Monday and return Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

Please stay safe.
