Chilly end to June, July starts our mild and dry, warmer for the holiday weekend

KTVZ

Bend, Ore (KTVZ) – The month of June will be ending on a cooler than normal note as highs will be in the low to middle 70s.  After a chilly weekend in the 50s and 60s we are on the rebound to get closer to normal today. The normal high temperature for late June is around 80, so we have been significantly cooler than usual.

The rain and high elevation snow over the weekend was good for the region. Even though we barely got any rain, the cooler temperatures gave us a brief break from the hot, sunny and dry pattern that increased our fire danger. The danger is still high, but with cooler temperatures and overcast skies, it does help to reduce the danger slightly.  We can take all we can get.

This week we will see a gradual rise in afternoon high temperatures, finally getting back to normal by Friday. There will be a noticeable chill in the air overnight as the area will start to see some clearing skies. The clear skies and light winds will allow the mercury in the thermometer to drop below freezing in locations like La Pine, Sunriver and Sisters.

Protect your perishable plants overnight this week as sub-freezing temps in the above-mentioned areas will return each night through at least Thursday.

It is unfortunate that we did not receive more rain than advertised with the weekend weather because we are about to go on another run of dry conditions.

The Fourth of July will be dry and sunny, so outdoor plans will not be impacted by the weather.  Highs are currently forecast to reach the upper 80s, so the above normal pattern arrives just in time for the holiday.

Enjoy the festivities this week as we celebrate our Nation’s 250th birthday. Be aware that most fireworks are illegal, but more importantly, they may lead to new fires in this dry climate.

Please, Stay safe.
