Fire danger with a hot and dry week ahead
Today will be warm, in the 80s, nearly normal for this time of year. Lows tonight in the 40s and 50s, with a couple cooler spots like La Pine. Skies will clear up early this morning from yesterday’s clouds and rain.
A number of storms popped up yesterday, lightning and windy conditions accompanied them. Within the last day, we’ve had five new wildfire starts that, due to the gusty conditions, grew rapidly. A few of these fires have reached the 5,000-acre mark. The hot and dry pattern returns this week, which will be a cause for concern for these new fires. Wildfires will be more difficult to contain and there is potential for continued rapid fire growth. Smoke pollution and air quality issues will be back in our forecast this week. We still have a few more weeks of the official wildfire season, despite some of the more cool and wet days we’ve had recently. Continue to practice fire safety.
Tomorrow, we heat up into the 90s as a ridge builds over the region. This pattern will dominate for a while. We’ll remain in the 90s through this next upcoming weekend, at least. School starts hot this week, stay safe and protect yourself from the heat by drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks, and dressing accordingly.
Happy Tuesday, have a great day!
